The Horror

1989 – micro-album (7 minutes of horrifying anti-art)

Don’t take this too seriously. It was done very tongue-in-cheek.

I had had my new used Casio CZ-1000 synth for a couple of weeks and just started to work out how to make (well alter really) sounds. I wanted to make an album. The only problem was that I didn’t know how to play.

Not to let that get in the way of my ambitions I decided to focus on the sound to create the atmospheres instead. I made the sound I wanted for the scene and pressed Play & Record (you had to press both at once in those days) on my Audiosonic radio/cassette in glorious mono. I then made up the piece as I went. If I wasn’t happy I rewound and had another go.

Oddly my family didn’t really get it. The looks on their faces were somewhat strained. In reality the whole idea was only to have made an album, not for it to have actually have been any good. It was just the sense of having a record with a theme, tracks with titles and an overall vibe. I even had a cover – just not as good as the new one you see here as I didn’t have Inkscape to help me make it nice and shiny.

I was proud of that achievement then and still am now.
